Thriving Beyond Survival: Tessa E. Boyd's Guide to Running a Successful and Sustainable Business

Hey there, fellow entrepreneurs! I'm Tessa E. Boyd, and if there's one thing I've learned on my journey as a business owner, it's that success isn't just about making money—it's about building something meaningful and sustainable that positively impacts both your customers and the world around you. In this blog post, I'm excited to share some insights and strategies for running a successful and sustainable business that stands the test of time. When I say sustainable I am referring to being able to either sell your business or leave your business to your heirs.

Define Your Purpose:

The first step to building a successful and sustainable business is to define your purpose. What drives you? What impact do you want to make? Clarifying your mission and values will not only guide your business decisions but also attract like-minded customers and employees who believe in what you stand for.

Focus on Customer Experience:

Your customers are the lifeblood of your business, so it's essential to prioritize their experience at every touchpoint. From the moment they discover your brand to long after they make a purchase, strive to exceed their expectations and deliver exceptional value. Listen to their feedback, anticipate their needs, and always put their satisfaction first. Most recently, I found a mom-and-pop coffee shop that has the best coffee ever. I lightweight was started to become addicted to getting 1 cup of coffee in the morning. Well, I went a week ago to learn that their POS system was down and they were only accepting cash. I’m not one who keeps cash on me, so I was cashless and was on a time crunch. So needless to say, I did not get a cup of coffee. I returned a few days later to learn that their POS system was still down and they were only accepting cash. This day I had more time on my hands, so I went to the bank to get cash and then returned. But this time, I wanted to express my concern about them not having an alternative payment option like Zelle. The employee said that they mentioned their concerns to management but they were not concerned. On that note, I left it alone but did not feel like they were giving the customers an exceptional experience although having an exceptional product.

Embrace Innovation:

In today's rapidly changing world, innovation is key to staying ahead of the curve. Don't be afraid to think outside the box and embrace new ideas and technologies that can help you streamline processes, improve efficiency, and better serve your customers. Stay curious, stay adaptable, and never stop learning. Keep in mind that if you are pioneering an original idea you may have to get more creative and specific in launching your new idea.

Cultivate a Strong Company Culture:

Your employees are your greatest asset, so it's crucial to cultivate a strong company culture that empowers and inspires them to do their best work. Foster an environment of trust, collaboration, and continuous growth, where everyone feels valued and supported in reaching their full potential. Happy employees lead to happy customers and a thriving business.

Prioritize Sustainability:

As business owners, we have a responsibility to minimize our impact on the planet and contribute to a more sustainable future. Look for ways to reduce waste, conserve resources, and embrace eco-friendly practices throughout your operations. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it can also lead to cost savings and enhance your brand reputation.

Running a successful and sustainable business requires a combination of vision, strategy, and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world. By defining your purpose, prioritizing the customer experience, embracing innovation, cultivating a strong company culture, and prioritizing sustainability, you can build a business that thrives for years to come.
